The Nature of Dwellings
A new 208-page book, The Nature of Dwellings, explores seven single-family houses designed by Professor of Architecture David Hovey (ARCH '67, MS '71). Lavish photographs are accompanied by his personal comments about each house, and in an in-depth essay, he explains his objectives, his choice of materials, and his interest in designing buildings that incorporate the surrounding landscape.

| Professor David Hovey at the Winnetka, Illinois, house he designed for himself on a 60-foot bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. |
With names like Cloud Chaser, Shadow Caster, and Ravine Bluff, the houses-three near Chicago and four in Arizona-are at once rooted to their sites and extended out over the landscape. Most have open floor plans and floor-to-ceiling windows. Hovey's most recent houses, dramatically sited in the rugged terrain of the Sonoran Desert, explore the fundamental dichotomies in architecture: natural and built, machines and craft, shelter and exposure.
After working at a number of prestigious architecture firms, Hovey opened his own office, Optima, a design, development, and construction company. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he won an award from ITT's Alumni Association in 1970.
